Community surveillance of AIS in Minnesota lakes with eDNA

Our objective to develop efficient strategies for monitoring aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Minnesota lakes through the detection of eDNA. We are studying the effectiveness of eDNA sampling conducted by citizen scientists in hopes that we can increase our sampling presence across the state. By increasing our sampling with help from the community, we hope to have a better chance of detecting AIS like zebra mussels, spiny waterflea, rusty crayfish, and common carp. Early detection allows us to have a better chance at effective management and keeping our lakes healthy.

We are currently recruiting volunteers to help us sample these 10 Minnesota lakes:

  • Leech Lake, Cass County

  • Mille Lacs Lake

  • Forest Lake, Ramsey County

  • White Bear Lake, Washington County

  • Lake Phalen, Ramsey County

  • Lake Owasso, Ramsey County

  • Lower Prior Lake, Scott County

  • Island Lake Reservoir, St. Louis County

  • Shagawa Lake, St. Louis County

  • Lake Vermilion, St. Louis County
